NATCHEZ — Two shootings in the span of a few hours late Monday night and early Tuesday morning have left police searching for clues.

Natchez Police Detective Jerry Ford said investigators do not have many leads in the shooting death of Anthony Haywood, 30, of Natchez. He was gunned down sometime before 11 p.m. Monday on St. Catherine Street.

Ford said apparently Haywood was driving down St. Catherine Street near Winston Hill Street when multiple rounds were fired into his vehicle, which crashed near Brumfield Apartments.

Adams County Coroner James Lee said Haywood died from multiple gunshot wounds to his left side, torso and face.

At the scene Monday night, officers placed at least 10 evidence markers on the street where it appeared bullet casings had fallen. Shattered glass was scattered across the road near the corner of St. Catherine and Winston Hill streets.

At least 100 onlookers gathered behind yellow crime scene tape that blocked off the road from near Fourth Street back past Winston Hill.

The police department is also without solid leads on a shooting that happened at Zipy gas station on Old Washington Road shortly before 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, Ford said.

Evidence indicates the shooter or shooters drove past the gas station, parked and shot in the direction of an SUV in the Zipy parking lot, he said. The SUV was reportedly unoccupied, and no injuries were reported.

Police cannot say whether the two shootings are related, Ford said.

“I don’t want to say they are, and I don’t want to say they aren’t,” he said. “We’re looking into it, and hopefully we will be able to find out whether or not they are related.”

While two shootings happening overnight in Natchez is unusual, Ford said it has happened in the past. In several of the cases, Ford said, the shootings were connected and linked to retaliation.

Both shootings occurred in the city’s Ward 4, and Ward 4 Alderman Tony Fields called the violence “senseless.”

“This is just not the type of city that we live in,” he said. “Nothing can happen that’s worth having that kind of violence.

“My prayer is that whoever is responsible is brought to justice to the fullest extent of the law. We have to find a better way to work out our differences. To not have regard for human life, that is just scary. It hurts our families, and it hurts our community as a whole.”

Anyone with information about the shootings is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 601-442-5000.

Crime Stoppers offers a reward of up to $1,000 for tips leading to the arrest and conviction of a suspect.
