NATCHEZ — A Natchez man was shot to death while apparently driving down St. Catherine Street late Monday night.
Adams County Coroner James Lee said Anthony Haywood, 30, of Natchez died from multiple gunshot wounds to his left side, torso and face.
Lee said it appeared Haywood was driving on St. Catherine Street when multiple rounds were fired into the vehicle, which crashed near Brumfield Apartments.
“Whoever the shooter or shooters were, they definitely had intent to kill him,” Lee said. “It’s just a terrible tragedy. I thought we had quit doing all this here in Natchez.”
The Natchez Police Department and Adams County Sheriff’s Office received multiple calls that appeared related to the incident, including calls of shots fired in the area of Brumfield Apartments shortly before 11 p.m., as well as at least one call about the vehicle crash.
Natchez police and Adams County sheriff’s deputies were at the scene into the early morning.
Officers placed at least 10 evidence markers on the street where it appeared bullet casings had fallen. Shattered glass was scattered across the road near the corner of St. Catherine and Winston Hill streets.
At least 100 onlookers gathered behind yellow crime scene tape that blocked off the road from near Fourth Street back past Winston Hill.
Natchez Police Sgt. Felesha Fleming said shortly before 1 a.m. police could not release further information about the shooting.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 601-442-5000.
