VIDALIA — A suspect charged with second-degree murder had his arraignment postponed on charges related to a firearm reportedly found when detectives searched his Monterey residence.

Hartwell Layne Tiffee, 34, 679 Louisiana 907, is accused of killing Duell Moreland, 26, whose body was found in a bayou off Peale Cross Road in Monterey in April. Tiffee, a relative of Moreland’s, was charged with murder earlier this month.

Tiffee was facing two charges of possession or dealing in unregistered or illegally transferred weapons related to a sawed-off shotgun found by detectives.

Seventh District Judge John Reeves asked Tiffee if he had an attorney.

“I intend on hiring Mr. (Derrick) Carson,” Tiffee said. “I haven’t had a chance to get out to give him any money.”

District Attorney Brad Burget said his office also had not received the files needed on this charge from the Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office, so he motioned for the arraignment to be moved to June 29.

Tiffee, whose bond is set at $650,000, has also been charged with four counts of possession of stolen property.

Moreland went missing from his grandparent’s residence on March 29. He reportedly received a number of phone calls that evening before leaving the residence, which is where he primarily resided.

After a month of searching, his body — mostly skeletal remains — was found in late April by his grandfather, Rufus “Buddy” Tiffee, who received a tip from a family friend and organized a boat expedition.

Moreland’s body was sent to the Louisiana State University FACES Lab at the time it was recovered by law enforcement and was returned to the family on May 24. The funeral was at the Eva Church of God in Monterey on May 28, almost two months after he went missing.

CPSO Chief Deputy David Hedrick has said more arrests are pending in connection with the Moreland homicide.
