GREENWOOD — Cathedral High School golfer Chase Kaiser’s MAIS season with the Green Wave is in the books, but there is no offseason for the seventh grader.

Kaiser competed in a Mississippi Junior Golf Association tournament at Greenwood Country Club Wednesday and Thursday, placing fourth overall in the tournament. Kaiser shot 169 over two rounds. He shot 83 during Wednesday’s round and 86 Thursday. Kaiser’s fourth-place finish left him 17 shots off the lead in his first MJGA tournament of the year.

“It definitely could have been better, but it was by far my best performance in an MJGA tournament,” he said.

Kaiser said he’s put in plenty of work during the offseason to improve his golf game, and this year, he is seeing his work come to fruition. Kaiser said his game improved by 15 strokes in one year of work.

“I know if you work hard, you improve,” Kaiser said. “I didn’t know it would be by that much”

Kaiser recorded two birdies in his first round. He said his short game and iron play were affected by the difficult pin placement on some of the holes. It was Kaiser’s first time playing at Greenwood Country Club, besides a practice round on Tuesday.

“A lot of the pins were in dangerous positions,” Kaiser said. “I had to be aggressive (on approach shots). If I missed the green, sometimes I left myself with a really hard chip.”

The tournament will be the first of approximately five tournaments this summer for Kaiser. He plays in the 12- to 13-year-old age bracket with competition he has faced in past years at MJGA tournaments. He said his two days at Greenwood are a solid start in what he anticipates will be a summer hunting the top positions on the leaderboards.

“I’ll take it,” Kaiser said. “It was good enough to start off the year to get comfortable and be able to contend … You always have to believe you can win but this year I have a much better chance.”
