NATCHEZ — For the second consecutive day, the Natchez Police Department responded to an empty bomb threat, this time at the Natchez Youth Center on Triumph Lane.

The suspicious package reported Wednesday turned out to be an archery target, not an explosive.

Police Chief Daniel White said a concerned youth center employee called the police around noon to investigate what at first appeared to be a suitcase wrapped up in black tape, which was left in the parking lot sometime this morning.

White said bomb detection dogs, Adams County Sheriff’s Office deputies, the FBI and a bomb squad from the Jackson area responded to the scene.

“There was no way to determine what it was, or if they had put something in it,” White said.

Residents who notice a suspicious package, especially in a public area or inside a building, should not approach the item and should notify law enforcement, White said.

“You never know, it may turn out to be something real,” he said.

The bomb squad arrived around 3 p.m., and determined the suspicious package to be safe after X-raying it.

The FBI and the bomb squad traveled to Natchez Wednesday for the second day in a row.

Tuesday morning, police responded to a call from the Doctor’s Pavilion on Seargent S. Prentiss Drive about a suspicious package found on the floor of one of the restrooms.

The package, which White said was two cell phones and a charger bound in black tape, was discovered by a patient and reported to a receptionist, who called the police.

Bomb detection dogs alerted to the cell phone package Tuesday, leading to a response from the Jackson Police Department bomb squad.
