Family of homicide victim still looking for answers

MONTEREY — A Monterey homicide victim’s body was returned to his parents Tuesday, but the family is still upset the Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office has yet to name a suspect or make an arrest.
The family is planning a Saturday funeral for Duell Moreland, 26, who went missing March 29 from his grandparents’ home and his body — mostly skeletal remains — was recovered in late April by his grandfather, Rufus “Buddy” Tiffee, in a bayou off of Peale Cross Road in Monterey. It was an area where Moreland was known to spend time.
Steve Murrell, Moreland’s stepfather, said having the body back is a relief for the family.
“That will hopefully give (Kim Murrell, Moreland’s mother) a little bit of closure there — that phase will be behind us,” he said. “It’s going to be pretty tough, but it will definitely be good to get it behind us so we can move on to the next phase.”
Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy David Hedrick said the department is still conducting interviews and sending persons of interest for polygraph tests.
Hedrick said investigators were looking through video and checking text message records of Moreland as well as the persons of interest.
Hedrick would not say where the video was obtained from, nor would he say how many persons of interest there are in the investigation.
In Monterey, people are still on edge about this homicide, Murrell said.
“We are anxiously waiting an arrest to be made,” he said. “The general consensus in the community is that we can’t believe no one has been arrested. We can’t believe — with how many people who were involved — that no one is saying anything.”
Moreland’s body had been with the FACES Lab in Baton Rouge since his remains were recovered April 29. Hedrick said at the time the evidence gained from having his body at the lab for up to six weeks would be invaluable in bringing the family justice.
The sheriff’s office has named one person of interest, Hart L. Tiffee, 34, 679 Louisiana 906, who was arrested on a different charge a day after Moreland’s body was found. Tiffee is a relative of Moreland’s.
Hedrick has previously said the polygraph tests were being conducted on 3-4 other persons of interest and phone records have been obtained to be analyzed. The Louisiana State Police have assisted in the investigation and with interviewing witnesses.
Visitation with Moreland’s family is scheduled fro 5 p.m. Friday at Eva Church of God in Monterey. The funeral will be at 10:30 Saturday morning at the church, and burial will follow at Lone Pine Cemetery in Monterey.
