NASD retreat rescheduled in Natchez

NATCHEZ — Natchez-Adams School District Interim Superintendent Fred T. Butcher decided too much work was needed to have an out-of-town administrator’s retreat — so he moved it back to Natchez.
The leadership retreat, previously scheduled for Biloxi, has been moved to Natchez for June 27-29. During Butcher’s first school board meeting in April, he had mentioned wanting to reschedule it so principals and central office staff could go to work when the retreat let out at noon.
“I want it to be a half day spent on instruction, and another half, where they go back to school and start planning for the next school year,” Butcher said. “Especially in the area of curriculum.”
Butcher said an out-of-town retreat could be a good way for him to build a better relationship with principals and assistant principals, but he was worried about the lapse that would occur with administrators not being able to work in the afternoon. He also said it would save the district a little in travel expenses.
Topics during the retreat portion of the day will include sensitivity training, guides for more focused leading, special education training and strategic planning training. The retreat will run from 8 a.m. to noon on June 27 and June 28, and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 29.
The rescheduling was approved unanimously. Board president Amos James said he was glad to see the interim superintendent take charge.
“He said he wanted to move it to Natchez because they have a lot of work to do to get ready for the school year,” he said. “If they have a lot of work to do, I don’t have a problem with that at all.”
