Cathedral High School baseball may have played its final home game of the season Monday against Silliman Institute, but that won’t stop the Green Wave fans from catching a glimpse of what could be a second-consecutive championship.
After winning Game 1 Monday, 4-2, Silliman will host at 4:30 p.m. today in Clinton, La. The Green Wave will perhaps bring a strong following into enemy territory as family, friends and fans with old ties to the school make the trip to watch the Cathedral go out on top, or just short.
“This team has been together since they were 8 years old,” said Valerie Horton, grandmother of Cathedral catcher Zach Flattmann. “We did a lot of traveling when they were in Dixie Youth. We’ve seen the boys grow up since the age of 8. They are a very close-knit team.”
Valerie and her husband, Darrell Horton, live in Hammond, La., but have made the approximately 130-mile trip to Natchez several times to catch Cathedral’s home playoff games. Valerie said she and Darrell stayed in town to watch Zach’s 12-year-old brother Zeke play a travel ball tournament in Vidalia Saturday after Cathedral’s playoff game Friday.
“We’ve had a lot of baseball this week,” Darrell said.
The two plan on traveling to Clinton, roughly half the distance from Hammond to Vidalia, for the conclusion of the MAIS championship.
Porky Smith has also followed the team since they were youngsters. Smith said he was the Dixie Youth commissioner in Natchez for 46 years before hanging it up two years ago for health reasons. He still comes to watch Cathedral’s home games.
“That’s how I know all these kids, from Dixie Youth,” Smith said.
Smith saw Cathedral’s state championship appearances at Trustmark Park the past two seasons.
Josh Calloway said he has watched Cathedral baseball games for 35 years. He saw his grandchildren graduate from Cathedral. The Marshall, Texas, native said youngest granddaughter graduated from Cathedral two years ago. Calloway also saw Cathedral win its 2015 state championship at Trustmark Park.
“I’ve been to all the state playoff games,” Calloway said.
No high school fan base is complete without its student section. Cathedral junior Elizabeth Smith said she and friends have traveled to every away game they could.
After a season of pacing the state back and fourth, a trip to Clinton might seem like drive to the grocery store for fellow junior Mary Sessions.
“There hasn’t been a game more than two hours away,” Sessions said.
Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley said Game 2 of the championship series has been moved to 4:30 p.m. today. Game 3, if necessary, will be played approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of Game 2.
