Natchezian who looks like Ted Cruz finds Internet fame

NATCHEZ — Rarely does a Natchez resident become an overnight Internet sensation viewed by millions of people.
But Searcy Hayes, a relatively unknown just a week ago, who earned money cleaning houses, did just that.
“It has been good,” Hayes said. “I have just been kind of shocked and amazed about all of the stuff going around and everything.”
After the 21-year-old appeared on Maury Povich’s TV show, viewers decided she bore a striking resemblance to Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz.
Hayes went on the show this past Monday when her fiancé, Freddie Green, accused her of cheating on him. Like many before her, Hayes proved she was faithful to her 25-year-old beau by passing a lie detector test and showcasing DNA results that pointed to Green as the father of their 3-month-old son.
Soon numerous websites began posting side-by-side photos with Hayes next to Cruz that have likely appeared on many Facebook timelines in the Miss-Lou.
The amount of attention has been overwhelming, she said, but Hayes said she has done her best to get through it.
“Sometimes it don’t work, but I just let everything go over my shoulder,” she said.
The Internet meme star said she hasn’t seen the side-by-side photos yet because she hasn’t really been on Facebook for unrelated reasons.
“I’ve been trying to ignore Facebook, other than checking my messages on messenger on my phone,” Hayes said. “I stopped looking at Facebook about two or three months ago.”
People say she favors Cruz, but Hayes said she doesn’t really think so.
“His nose is bigger than mine, and our chins are shaped differently,” she said. “I don’t think I look like him.”
Hayes, who has said she has no plans to vote, did not previously know who Cruz was.
“I know who he is now because of all of this,” she said. “The only one I had heard of before was Donald Trump.”
Hayes said she hasn’t really followed the election, so she doesn’t feel like she should vote.
“If I don’t know what you are running for, I’m not going to stick my neck out and vote for you,” she said. “Me personally, I don’t want to stick my neck out for someone if I haven’t seen what they do.”
Hayes said her recent fame has also brought along its share of untrue rumors as well, including one suggested she planned to star in an adult film, which she said is a complete lie.
“A lot of people believe that if it’s on Facebook, it’s true,” she said. “No. To me, Facebook is not the real truth.”
Hayes said it’s been weird being contacted by so many people seeking to talk to her about her resemblance to Cruz, but it’s also been good because of payments some media organizations have paid her for her story have helped her family.
“Before all of this, I had just started buying a place, and this kind of helps me finish that off,” she said. “It has helped me out a lot.”
