NATCHEZ — Natchez High School exploded for five runs in the first inning and seven more in the third inning to rout McComb High School 17-7 in softball action Monday night.

Natchez High pounded out 10 hits in the game and was led offensively by Destiny Lyle and Destiny Trask, who each launched a home run in the win.

“I’m very proud of these girls,” Natchez coach Bonita Hamilton said. “They played defense and hit the ball well, that’s what we practice a lot. They executed (Monday).”

The contest was the Lady Bulldogs (1-1) first home game of the season, coming 30 days after their slated original home game.

“The season started March 3, and we weren’t able to get any games in because of the rain,” Hamilton said. “But we continued to practice — even on weekends — hoping the next week would be sunny so we could play … The girls stay focused, and everyone is still focused and coming out to practice and continuing to be be focused.”

Hamilton cited assistant coach and former player Chelsea Hall as playing a vital role in helping the players prepare for Monday’s game.

“She’s played a very important role with these young girls,” Hamilton said. “Having an ex-player for an assistant, makes it easier.”

Carleigh Sproles earned the win for Natchez, and Hamilton said she did a “wonderful job.”

Natchez will attempt to keep the momentum going Wednesday when it hosts Port Gibson High School.

“(Monday), we jumped out and were fired up,” Hamilton said. “They impressed me more than you can know.”
