CLINTON — The regular season wasn’t the end of the season for several key members of the Natchez High School girls basketball team.

Senior Ernesha Chatman played in the Mississippi-Alabama All-Star Game last week, and junior guard Kirdis Clark is set to play in the North-South Mississippi All-Star game. Natchez coach Alphaka Moore will serve as the South team’s head coach at Mississippi College in Clinton today.

“I’m excited and a little nervous,” Clark said. “(I’m looking forward to) meet great players who I’ve played against and just the experience overall.”

Moore and Clark began the two-hour drive to Mississippi College in Clinton Thursday morning and practiced in the afternoon. Moore said the tone of the practice was to build trust between the players and get everyone in sync.

“It’s hard to say they’ll get to know each other in that first day,” Moore said. “We’ll see how they play together, who will play (which position).”

Moore said it will be a good opportunity for Clark and her all-star teammates to play on a big stage that isn’t a state playoff game, and a unique opportunity for her to build chemistry among a group of girls who share talent but haven’t play together.

“I’m looking forward to it because it’s my first all-star game,” Moore said. “I’m lucky to do this so early in my career. I just feel really blessed for the opportunity. It’s going to be really interesting to be able to work with girls who haven’t played together.”

Moore said when she was selected as the South team’s coach, she didn’t initially realize the responsibility of arranging the team’s uniforms, hotel accomadations and meals were in her lap.

“Kirdis and I will meet the other girls,” Moore said. “I’m responsible for … making sure they’re doing what they’re supposed to be doing.”

Moore said it’s been a bit of a time crunch — she was still preparing Natchez High School for the region tournament while she began the all-star arrangements — but she is looking forward to the game now that all of the logistics are behind her.

As for Clark, she is playing on a stage with a handful of four-star recruits in the class of 2017, which means college scouts will likely attend the game.

“I know they have some people who are ranked, and hopefully I’ll get a little more exposure if I play well,” Clark said.

Additionally, Clark took part in a 3-point shoot Thursday, advancing into the second round.

The Natchez junior connected on 18 3-pointers in a 50-second span. She fell three made shots short of advancing to the next round.

The girls’ game is set to start at 6 p.m. today, with the boys game following at approximately 7:30 p.m.
