Concordia Parish school buildings leaking

VIDALIA — After a stormy day, leaky roofs absorbed much discussion Thursday night at the Concordia Parish School Board meeting.
Though it is less than 12 years old, the roof on the Vidalia High School library and science building has already begun to leak.
The building, along with several others in the district, were tested Thursday as approximately 3.06 inches of rain fell in the area before 8 p.m., the National Weather Service in Jackson indicated.
“We don’t think the leak is too big,” maintenance and transportation supervisor Glenn Henderson said. “We think we can handle it internally.”
School board president Raymond T. Riley said the district’s biggest problem with leaks is the Monterey High School Library.
“Every time we patch it up, it starts leaking somewhere else,” he said. “You can only patch up a place so many times, so it might be time for a new roof.”
The board discussed potentially getting an architect in to provide an estimate on what some options might cost.
Ferriday Junior High School’s cafeteria also leaked during the storm.
“We’re getting ready to do a renovation on that building anyway, so we’ll make sure we include the roof,” Riley said.
The project hasn’t gone out for bids yet.
Unrelated to the leak situation, board members also discussed researching how the district might extend the eighth-grade building at Vidalia Junior High School.
-The board unanimously approved an early dismissal day on March 18 to discuss report cards with parents.
