Local violence demands our attention

Our community has seen another violent act injure teenagers.

This time the weekend shooting did not kill anyone — one teen was shot in the neck, another in the arm and two more injured by flying glass in the shooting.

Yet such violence has become so commonplace that most of us don’t as much as bat an eye at it.

Over the last several years, a number of people in the community have been killed in senseless acts of violence — most over a few dollars to be stolen, some over mere personal disagreements.

Police were searching for clues and suspects Sunday in the incident, but all they would say publicly was that four teenagers were sitting in the cab of a truck just after midnight when the shooting occurred.

Once upon a time Natchez had a curfew. Perhaps we need to look at why teenagers were apparently hanging out after midnight. If that is the case, police need to pursue the parents as well as the shooter.

Sadly, the culture of violence has become commonplace and solving that will take a multi-faceted approach.

Police need to crack down on children — that’s what teenagers are in our minds — who are in possession of firearms illegally. But parents, teachers and church leaders must also redouble efforts to break the cycle of violence.

Unfortunately, the culture of violence is perpetuated in music and celebrities that give these children poorly guided aspirational heroes.

Eliminating that will take time, but each moment that we delay, means more children are at risk of dying.
