We are glad election saga is over

Outgoing District 37 Sen. Melanie Sojourner appears to have never met a windmill too imaginary to battle.

Like in Cervantes’ great literary work, “Don Quixote,” Sojourner’s four years in the Mississippi Senate ended just like it began, with a futile battle against an imaginary foe.

Sojourner won her seat four years ago by allowing the controlling powers of the state’s Republican Party to pile money into her campaign.

That money purchased piles of mud that was then slung fast and hard against the incumbent, Democrat Sen. Bob Dearing.

The ridiculous claims and faked images of Dearing cozied up with state and national Democrat leaders worked.

But many of those same voters soon realized the world is not always a battle that Sojourner and her ilk seem to imply it is.

Yes, the state’s Republican Party clearly dropped support for Sojourner after she vocally supported an ill-fated attempt to oust long-time Republican U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran in 2014.

Sojourner’s constant claims of conspiracy and battles against alleged boogiemen lost her the support of many.

For us, we lost faith in her during the 2014 U.S. Senate campaign when she missed more than 1-in-10 of the roll call votes in the Mississippi Senate as she played the part of Sancho Panza to Sen. Chris McDaniels’ Don Quixote.

Even as she rides into the sunset of her public service career — at least for now — she’s still fighting, saying, “Even the Mississippi state senate just turned a blind eye to 19 laws being broken and just shunned the Supreme Court and the case law.”

Sadly, she and “Don” McDaniels will probably continue believing the world is a grand conspiracy and continue the good fight.

In the meantime, we’re glad the saga is over and that District 37 has a capable leader again. Congratulations, Mr. Dearing. Please make us proud.
