NATCHEZ — Cathedral head basketball coach Peter Arnold called the Lady Wave’s win against Block last week the biggest of the season, but Thursday night, he was quick to retract that statement.
“You can scratch that and put AC in,” Arnold said. “I don’t think anybody gave us a whole lot of a chance to beat them because they are a very good team. We just hung in there, and when the tides turned, basketball is a funny game, things can get on a roll.”
Arnold’s Lady Wave defeated Adams County Christian School 49-43, rallying from as much as 14 points down. The win is the sixth in a row for Cathedral.
“We looked a bit intimidated and nervous,” Arnold said of the team early on. “At halftime I asked them, down just five, do y’all believe you can play with them now. And once that light flashed on, they started believing.”
For ACCS head coach Melanie Hall, the game shouldn’t have been in reach in her opinion.
“We should have put it away at 24-10,” she said. “We didn’t play well and I have to hand it to Cathedral, they outplayed us. They outrebounded us and we had 24 turnovers. We weren’t taking care of our business. We got in rush mode and didn’t execute together.”
ACCS led 17-8 at the end of the first quarter, and continued to pile it on until the Lady Wave went on a 9-0 run to end the first half.
Arnold said the glaring stat of the first half for Cathedral was free throws.
“We were 1 of 12 on free throws and we thankfully hit our last two to go 3 of 14 for the half,” he said. “We just kept hanging in there. It is a long game, just keep fighting.”
Cathedral clawed back into the game in the third behind scoring efforts from Baylee Graning, Caroline Kaiser and Grayson Bryant.
The three led the team in scoring, with Bryant recording a game-high 16 points.
“She rebounded all night and hit a huge three late in the game,” Arnold said. “It was a complete game for her and she was massive.”
The Lady Rebels also ran into trouble with Cathedral being able to break their full-court press. Something Hall said she was disappointed to see.
“We weren’t moving our feet well and didn’t play defense well,” she said. “That is disheartening. Hopefully, this is a wake up call for us.”
Offensively for ACCS, Anna McDaniel led the way with 10 points. Bailey Boyd added eight and Ashleigh Williams also added eight.
