Recreation plans positive for community

Natchez and Adams County appear to be poised to finally move forward the collective plan to expand and improve the community’s recreational resources.

Clearly having the city, county and school district working together is pragmatic and makes good financial sense as well.

Natchez-Adams County — despite the invisible city-limits boundary — is one community for all practical purposes and making recreation special for all residents and putting it under a single umbrella makes perfect sense.

We’re thrilled that city, county and recreation commission leaders have managed to finally get plans moving again after years of being stalled.

Basically, all that remains is approval from the Natchez-Adams School Board to get the agreement ready for approval from the state.

We still believe the current plans to build a pool first, then slowly build out the remainder of the recreation complex seem illogical to us. Implementing a larger, more comprehensive recreation plan all at once would make the most sense to us.

The relatively recent addition of the YMCA organization into the recreation plan does, however, make the pool’s long-term management less of a concern. YMCA leadership should improve the plans and remove at least some of the politics from recreation.

Ultimately, recreation improvements should enhance the quality of life for all area residents — present and future. If that happens, maybe we’ll all quickly forget that it’s taken so long to get to this point.
