NATCHEZ — A Natchez police officer was airlifted to Rapides Regional Medical Center Saturday afternoon after being shot at approximately 4 p.m.

Natchez Police Chief Daniel White said Officer Elvis Prater was shot, allegedly by his wife, at Prater’s residence on Eastwood Road.

White says they have a suspect in custody, but  no arrest has been made. White did not know the name of suspect.

Prater was shot once, White said. White said he was unsure if Prater was shot in the back or chest. White said he believed no one else was in the house at the time of the shooting.
