NATCHEZ — After being ejected from Trinity Episcopal Day School’s first round Mississippi Association of Independent Schools AA football playoff game last Friday, head coach Zach Rogel has been suspended.
Rogel’s penalty is a suspension from coaching basketball or until March 1, 2016.
“Coach Rogel was recently ejected for contesting a call in which one of his players was injured,” Trinity Head of School Les Hegwood said in a statement.
Trinity has named Chris Bunio the head basketball coach for the season, a position Rogel held last year. However, Rogel isn’t sour about the situation.
“(Bunio) is a young guy, but has a mature head on his shoulders,” Rogel said. “He is closer to the game of basketball than myself, and was a good player himself, so it is a good chance for him to run the show. I have full faith in him and his ability.”
Andy Blair will assist Bunio according to Hegwood.
Rogel said he will, however, return to the baseball field this year.
“Elliot Meng will be the head coach and I will be taking on the assistant coach role,” Rogel said. “I enjoyed it a lot two years ago and got to work with a good group of seniors. We’ve got to build a baseball program if we want to be competitive among schools in town. I’m expecting us to have 30-plus players come out between junior varsity and varsity.”
