DELHI — With their first district win under their belt, the Delta Charter Storm are looking to continue their success this week when they travel for another district clash, this time against the Delhi Bears.
Delta Charter defeated Sicily Island 28-6 last week for their second win of the season and first district victory, and Storm head coach Jarrett Hoffpauir said his team is feeling good heading into Friday’s game.
“We put together a complete game, and that is what we talked about all last week,” Hoffpauir said. “We played pretty well and we’re getting better every week. That was our goal from the start of this thing.”
Delhi enters the matchup at 5-3 overall and with a 3-2 record in district play. The Bears dropped their most recent contest against St. Frederick 32-20.
“They are an athletic group,” Hoffpauir said. “They’ve got some guys that can make some plays. They are fast and run the ball hard. We are going to have to try to slow them down defensively and then just stick to our game plan on offense.”
An emerging weapon on offense for the Storm is Jalen Williams, who ran for 139 yards and two touchdowns against Sicily Island.
“A couple of weeks ago the coaches got together and saw something with him and liked the way he ran the ball,” Hoffpauir said. “So we worked him in there a bit and the past few weeks he’s been getting better and better.”
Hoffpauir said being able to run the ball only makes things easier for quarterback Trey Poole.
“We have three starting running backs in Freddie Mango, Tut Hatten and Jalen. Those three are going to be special players in a few years and to have all of them is good. We want to develop them and let Trey continue to get better.”
The Storm and Bears are set for a 7 p.m. kickoff Friday.
