NATCHEZ — The Cathedral girls soccer team fell to Park Place 4-1 in the opening round of the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools playoffs. But the girls participating still made history in defeat.
Going into the game, a Cathedral girls soccer team had never won a first-round playoff nor scored a goal in playoffs. With less than three minutes to play, Emma Hogue drilled a shot through the net to avoid the shutout loss and become the first female to score a goal in the playoffs at CHS.
Her father Dennis Hogue watched on as coach, fighting back his emotions.
“That was very special,” Hogue said. “It was a double-whammy for me. I got a little emotional you know.”
Park Place why it was the favorite early with ball control, speed and precision at the net.
“Tactically, they’re smart, and they had much better control than I was anticipating,” Hogue said.
Park Place took a 4-0 lead into the half. Hogue rallied his girls and challenged them to step up their game defensively. He also challenged their pride.
“OK, we might not be in this game to win, but let’s shut them down,” Hogue said. “They just stiffened up and got some stops. Abby Brown was a machine.”
ACCS 0, Hartfield 5
HATTIESBURG —Adams County Christian School fell to Hartfield Tuesday night in similar fashion.
Following a 5-0 loss to Hartfield, ACCS head coach Jimmy Allgood said his team struggled out of the gates.
“All of those five goals came in the first half,” Allgood said. “We didn’t allow a goal in the second half, though.”
Both ACCS and Cathedral were eliminated from the MAIS playoffs following the losses.
