Pregnancy center set for move

NATCHEZ — Soon, the Caring Hearts Pregnancy Resource Center will have a new home in downtown Natchez.

During its year and a half run, the center has been working out of a room in the New Covenant Presbyterian Church on Homochitto Street. Now, thanks to the Knights of Columbus, the Caring Hearts center hopes it will be able to move into a new location in approximately one month.

Co-chair Virginia O’Beirne said the non-denominational and non-government center wants to show women they have a choice and tries to help women with whatever problems they face.

“It’s basically for girls who are pregnant and they need some help,” O’Beirne said. “Whether it’s to talk to their parents or they need a car seat or a crib or baby clothes and blankets, things like that.”

Co-chair Ruth Powers said the center also helps people connect to resources.

But the center is not just for unmarried mothers.

“This is for anyone who feels like they are facing a pregnancy that will put undue stress on them financially, emotionally or any other way,” Powers said.

While Powers said they’re grateful to New Covenant, whenever volunteers opened the center they would have to pack up everything when they got ready to close. O’Beirne said they were never made to feel as though they were in the way, but it was a small space.

The organization also had to store their supplies in the VFW building.

When the Knights of Columbus offered them space in their building at the beginning of the year, the organization accepted.

“We were real excited to have a place where we could spread out,” O’Beirne said.

Grand Knight Dan Miller said the Knights offered them the space because they had extra room and are strong in the pro-life movement.

“We thought that this would give them their own space and everything would be a little more convenient for them,” Miller said.

The new area, located in the back of the Knights of Columbus building, has two rooms.

And, although it’s never been a problem in the past, Powers said the new space would offer something else too.

“There will be more of a sense of privacy for the people who use the services,” Powers said.

The group still won’t be able to store all of the items they give to expectant mothers in the same building, but now the group plans using a building owned by St. Mary Basilica for storage. Powers said the distance will be “a block as opposed to all the way across town.”

“I’m very excited about having a new, larger space to use,” Powers said.
