VIDALIA — Three Vidalia residents — including two teenagers — were killed Thursday after the vehicle they were in collided with an 18-wheeler log truck on U.S. 84.

Louisiana State Police Master Trooper Scott Moreau said the log truck was westbound on U.S. 84 east of Louisiana 565 when the driver, Mark I. Gordon, 28, of Jonesville, lost control and crossed into the eastbound lane.

Richard L. Stewart Jr. 49, of Vidalia, was driving a Dodge pickup eastbound and attempted to miss the log truck by swerving off the road, but the two vehicles collided.

Moreau said Stewart and two of his passengers, Vera C. Stewart, 17, and George Stewart, 15, were ejected from the vehicle and killed. They were not wearing seat belts.

A fourth passenger, Shelia D. Smith, 51, of Vidalia, sustained moderate injuries and was transported to Rapides Regional Medical Center. Smith was wearing her seat belt.

Gordon was not injured in the crash.

Routine toxicology tests and charges are pending. The crash remains under investigation. Moreau said.

Troop E troopers have investigated 33 fatal crashes this year, resulting in 40 fatalities.
