franklinton, la. — Coming off a 40-14 win against a perennial powerhouse, Adams County Christian School was looking to continue their hot streak to start the season.
Although the Rebels recorded a 27-7 victory against Bowling Green, things didn’t go exactly as planned.
“We had some starters out and when you come off a game where you upset a big school and go down to Bowling Green, you don’t necessarily overlook them, but the hype wasn’t there from the kids,” ACCS assistant coach Matthew Freeman said. “They kids played down to their level.”
It didn’t take long for the Rebels to strike. On the first play from scrimmage, ACCS’ Shaverick Williams tossed a 43-yard touchdown pass to Sam Butler to put the Rebels up 7-0.
“Coach (David) King knew it was a touchdown play,” Freeman said. “He said they would be coming up to make a play and we hit them with a trick play, and it worked perfectly.”
ACCS quarterback Carlos Woods found the end zone later in the first on a 5-yard run to increase the lead to 14-0.
Williams’ big night continued in the second when he scored his second touchdown run, this time a 63-yard run to give ACCS a commanding 21-0 lead.
“He is electric when he gets the ball,” Freeman said. “He threw a beautiful pass and then ran another reverse and got in open field and shot like a rocket through the hole. You get him in open space, and he can make things happen.”
Bowling Green’s lone touchdown came in the third quarter on a 48-yard run.
ACCS capped the scoring in the fourth quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run from Jordan Wells.
The Rebel defense shined, giving up just one first down in the game and holding Bowling Green to just 68 total yards.
“The defense won the game for us,” Freeman said.
Chris Smotherman led the way for ACCS on defense with 11 tackles and a fumble recovery. Cole Melton also chipped in with five tackles of his own.
Offensively for ACCS, Chisum Mardis and Williams led the team in rushing with 79 yards a piece and Jordan Wells chipped in with 50 yards.
Through the air, Woods finished 8-of-17 for 47 yards and tossed an interception.
Next up for ACCS is a home game against Wilkinson County Christian Academy.
