Rebels to serve as underdogs vs. JA

NATCHEZ — Tough tests continue for Adams County Christian School.

After taking down MAIS AAAA University Academy 49-18 in Week 1, ACCS welcomes a traditional MAIS AAAA powerhouse to Natchez tonight in Jackson Academy.

“They are really good,” ACCS head coach David King said. “My mom would go in and put $400 on JA.”

The differences between the two teams are large, starting with size.

“We are dressing 34 players and that takes a toll,” King said. “They dress out 80 players.”

Despite entering the game off a 16-7 loss to Northeast Lauderdale, the Raiders bring a pedigree that is hard to look past.

“I try to tell the team to not be intimidated by anybody,” King said. “We’ve proven we are a good team, and I don’t feel like we will be intimidated.”

King said the key to the game is simple — keep the ball out of Jackson Academy’s hands.

“We’ve got to keep the ball as long as possible in this one,” King said. “We have to stay in the game early if we want to go toe to toe with them and we’ve got to have some fortune go our way.”

Jackson Academy allowed 239 yards on the ground against Northeast Lauderdale in Week 1, and that is something ACCS is hoping to exploit.

With a strong running game led by Chisum Mardis, Christopher White and Sam Butler, the Rebels will look to move the ball on the ground.

Mardis recorded two rushing touchdowns against University Academy and Butler added one of his own.

Through the air, the Raiders were stingy, allowing just 115 yards. But ACCS brings in veteran quarterback Carlos Woods, who tossed three touchdowns in the Rebels recent win.

While a win for the Rebels will more than likely be considered an upset, King said it isn’t something they are going to harp on.

“I’ve always preached about the next ballgame,” he said. “We’ll fight with everything we’ve got, and if we win, we’ll celebrate for 15 minutes and turn around and get ready for a good Bowling Green team. At the AAA level, there is no time to celebrate or rest because someone is always waiting in line.”

The Rebels and Raiders are set for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Bobby Marks Stadium.
