NATCHEZ — Incumbent Democrat Calvin Butler clenched his spot in the November general election after defeating his primary runoff opponent in Tuesday’s election
Butler beat S.E. “Spanky” Felter with 52.3 percent of the votes, or 1,073, to Felter’s 977 votes, or 47.7 percent.
Butler will square off against Republican Grady Wilson in the general election on Nov. 3. Butler said he felt good following his victory and said his supporters helped him overcome Felter’s challenge.
Butler ousted Felter from his supervisor position in 2011.
After the first primary pushed Butler and Felter into a runoff, Butler said he felt discouraged.
“People came to me and said, ‘You can’t give up. You’ve got to keep going and doing what you’re doing; we need you,’” Butler said. “That really got me going.”
Butler said facing a runoff candidate has allowed him a chance to talk to voters about the issues concerning them.
“Some of the feedback I got was that people really appreciated my passion for getting jobs to Adams County and my passion for making recreation happen,” he said. “I think that really gave me an edge over my opponent.”
Felter could not be reached for comment.
