alexandria — The Adams County Christian School Rebels may have started the 2015 season with a new identity, but they did so with a bang, taking down MAIS AAAA opponent University Academy 49-18 on the road.
“That is where we wanted to be,” ACCS assistant coach Bill James said. “We made some mistakes even with the points we put up, so there are some things we are working on. But it was the kind of things you expect in the first game of the season.”
In the end, James said it was the power of the Rebels that wore down University Academy.
“That helped,” said James of the Rebels’ ground-and-pound offensive attack. “But we also had some big plays. We’ve got a well balanced football team. We’ve got a good ground game and some speedsters on the outside. It is a balanced attack.”
The game was tight after the first quarter with ACCS leading just 14-12, but the Rebels erupted for 21 points and 14 points in the second and third quarters respectively to put the game out of reach.
Touchdowns for the Rebels went to George Scott on a 30-yard reception, Carlos Woods on a 75-yard run, Sam Butler on a 35-yard run, Chisum Mardis who recorded two rushing touchdowns and Shaverick Williams who had two receiving touchdowns.
University Academy’s last touchdown in the fourth quarter came against ACCS’ third team defense.
James said taking down a AAAA school is always a big deal, but they will have to be even sharper next week if they want to beat AAAA powerhouse Jackson Academy.
“Anytime your program plays up and gets a win it is good and helps the power points system,” James said. “But we are going to have to clean up a lot of mistakes before next week. We have a lot of work to do. With our schedule, you can’t mistakes like we did (Friday) night.”
