Pack the Backpack begins

NATCHEZ — Backpacks are a common accessory for school children.

However, when school began, some of those backpacks were emptier than others.

It’s why the Natchez Junior Auxiliary created their new “Pack the Backpack” service project.

The goal is to purchase backpacks and fill them with supplies and uniforms for children in need.

“These are the most needy children in our school district as identified through a few different channels,” Meredith Faust, president of the Natchez JA, said, referring to school officials such as counselors.

In past years, JA members did a “Pack the Bus” event where community members could donate school supplies.

However, it had its downsides.

“When we do that we end up with a random mismatch of things,” Faust said.

The donations were also given to teachers, who then gave them to students.

“We decided to work in a more direct way with children this year,” Faust said.

The more one-on-one approach was inspired by a kindergarten Halloween party thrown by JA provisional members, members working towards full membership, last year. It was a hands-on event, and one Faust said resonated deeply.

“We loved that relationship and we’re trying to go back to that,” Faust said.

JA Member Lara Saunders has worked on “Pack the Bus” in past years, but said she is excited about the new one-on-one aspect of “Pack the Backpack.”

“This time we get to go to the school and actually hand them to the kids,” Saunders said, referring to the backpacks.

However, the JA doesn’t want the relationship to end with the handoff. Instead, Faust hopes to keep in touch with the children throughout the year and let them know someone cares.

The target is to get enough supplies for approximately 50 children. However, Faust said the true goal is different.

“As many as we can raise money for,” Faust said.

“Pack the Backpack” has several different donation levels, starting with a $10-50 donation and increasing to bronze, $50-100; silver, $100-150; gold $150-200; and platinum, $250 and up; sponsors.

While a platinum sponsor pays for all supplies and a uniform, all donations are accepted.

“Any amount helps,” Faust said.

All bronze, silver, gold and platinum sponsors will be listed on the flyer placed inside the backpacks unless they wish to give anonymously. Silver sponsors will also be listed on JA’s Facebook page, and gold sponsors will be listed on the Facebook page and print ads.

A platinum sponsor will be listed in the same places as a gold sponsor, as well as in radio ads.

The program runs until the end of August. Those interested in making a tax-deductible donation, or who require more information, can contact Faust at 601-446-3235 or send donations to PO Box #1592, Natchez, MS. 39121.

Checks should be made out to JA of Natchez.
