NATCHEZ — Scorecards were filled with pars, birdies and even eagles at Duncan Park Golf Course Saturday as golfers took their best swings in the Adams County Christian School Booster Club Scramble.
“We had teams turning in 18-under par out here, others at 17-under and others at 16-under,” booster club president John L. Sullivan said. “There was some good golf played today.”
Sullivan said he was blown away by the support of the community, which blew away his initial goals for the tournament.
“When I first started, I was shooting for nine teams,” he said. “Then the community showed up and knocked it out of the park. (Saturday) went off without a hitch. We had 18 teams play in the morning and 13 in the afternoon for a total of 31.”
The tournament was decided by a scorecard playoff, ultimately giving the win to Wilmar Construction.
“We eagled the par 5’s and Mark Carter chipped in on 11 for an eagle and that helped us out,” team member Larry Davis said. “We had three pars and three eagles and birdied the rest. It was a team effort.”
Billy Calcote, another member of the Wilmar Construction team, came up big on the greens in the winning effort.
“Like I told them, I was here to putt, and that’s what I did,” Calcote said. “We had a blast and it was awesome to have this many teams out here.”
Other teams who placed near the top of the leaderboard were Old South Winery, Rusty Marks, Concordia Bank, Matthew Freeman for Constable and the ACCS coaches.
Ultimately, Sullivan said it was nice to not only play a round of golf with good friends, but also raise money for a school dear to him.
“I’ve been with ACCS since I was 3-years-old,” he said. “To be able to promote something like this and have the community come and then give back to the school, it is phenomenal.”
Sullivan and others said they only see the tournament growing from this point on.
“We are going to turn it on and do this every year,” Sullivan said. “I expect it to go up from here.”
Davis agreed.
“With this being the first year, I don’t think it’ll do anything but grow,” Davis said. “Everybody enjoyed it.”
