NATCHEZ — Big things can come in small packages, and there were plenty of big bats to go around Saturday afternoon in an all-star T-ball game between Natchez Wallace and Natchez Adams.

The two teams combined for 44 runs and more than 50 hits, with Natchez Wallace taking home the victory, 27-17.

“They hit the ball really well,” Natchez Wallace head coach Brandon Atkins said. “We had some big innings where we made three outs and held them, and that is always big in T-ball.”

Each team is only allowed to score seven runs each inning, therefore when Natchez Wallace was able to hold Natchez Adams to two runs in two of the four innings played, the game ultimately fell in their favor.

“That was a big impact,” Natchez Adams head coach Craig Cox said. “If you don’t get those seven runs, it is hard to come back and fight.”

Atkins said he was proud of his team’s defensive effort in the contest, especially when they were able to turn a couple of double plays.

“They did really well as far as working together and making outs,” Atkins said.

“We had a couple of double plays and they did really well. You don’t see that with a lot of five and six year olds.”

Natchez Adams held an early 2-0 lead after the top half of the first, but Natchez Wallace went to the plate and went to work.

Natchez Wallace scored seven runs in three of the four innings, and Atkins said it is that batting ability that can take them a long way.

“We’ve got the bats to go a really long way if we are fortunate,” Atkins said. “But like I say, these are five and six year olds, you never know what you are going to get.”

What Atkins got Saturday, though was a big day at the plate from all of his kids.

Dash Savali led the team with two home runs and also had seven RBI. Doug Smith, Tamihanna Starr, Dylan Bailey, Nick Mascagni and Derrian Strauder all added a home run each in the game.

Although the game didn’t go in their favor, Cox said it can be looked at as a positive.

“The big thing is this team hadn’t been beaten,” he said. “I’m actually glad it happened because now they know they can be. Hopefully that pumps them up.”

Cox’s team had a solid day at the plate as well with Luke Hargis recording a home run and also having multiple players with three hits in the game.
