Weekend Ticket: Country music, plant sale headline weekend

NATCHEZ — An array of events — from country music and a spring fling to selling plants — are scheduled throughout the community this weekend.

Showers and thunderstorms are predicted for the weekend with temperatures ranging in the mid 70s.

Country music enthusiasts will gather Saturday for hard-hitting music, a 5K Hoop Skirt Fun Run, carnival rides, NASCAR simulators and a hot dog eating contest during RiverStock 2015.

Lonestar — a multi-platinum country music group — will headline the event, which will also feature Eric Dylan, Cheryl Luquire and local artists Hannah Belle Southerland, of Red Lick, and Mojo Mudd.

The 5K Hoop Skirt Fun Run will begin at 8 a.m. Entry fee is $25 and will include the run and a t-shirt.

Admission for children 5 and under is free. Cost for children 6 to 12 is $10 and cost for 13 and older is $20.

The admission price will allow children access to all carnival rides.

A Mutt Strut, coordinated by the Natchez Adams County Humane Society, begins at 9 a.m. Entry fee is $5 and will benefit the Humane Society.

Gates of the festival will open at noon.

ACCS Spring Fling

Adams County Christian School will host its annual Spring Fling from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Outside games, music, food, a petting zoo and sporting events on the school grounds will take place during the event.

The event is free and open to the public.

Ticket purchases are required to participate in activities.

Adams County Master Gardeners Plant Sale

The Adams County Master Gardeners will host its annual spring plant sale beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday on the Natchez bluff in front of the Grand Hotel.

The plant sale serves as the Adams County Maser Gardeners largest fund-raiser event.

Hundreds of plants will be up for grabs, including heirloom roses, larkspur, shrubs, various trees, ground covers and herbs.

Master Gardener volunteers will be available to answer any questions regarding plants.

Free gardening information from the Mississippi State Extension Service will also be available to discuss a variety of topics such as butterfly gardening, herb gardening, pruning and ant control.

Installation of Alcorn President Alfred Rankins Jr.

Alcorn State University will formally install Alfred Rankins Jr. as the 19th president Thursday and Friday with a number of events.

Activities will begin in Natchez with the Family First Luncheon from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today at Alcorn State University’s Natchez campus on 15 Campus Drive.

The cost to attend the First Family Luncheon is $35.

The Presidential Scholarship Gala will begin at 8 p.m. today at the Vicksburg Convention Center for $100 per guest.

Alcorn will also gather from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday with a Breakfast Prayer Service at the historic Oakland Memorial Chapel in Lorman prior to the Investiture Ceremony, where Rankins will be formally invested with the presidential instruments of office at 2 p.m. at the Davey L. Whitney HPER Complex in Lorman.

Friday Forum

The Friday Forum will take place at 8 a.m. Friday at the Natchez Coffee Company on Franklin Street. Representatives of Home with Heroes and Red Neck Adventures will serve as the guest speakers.
