NATCHEZ — After learning they had been eliminated from playoff contention, the Adams County Christian School Rebels entered their final game of the season against Riverfield with heavy hearts.
Their disappointment showed early on, as the Rebels found themselves down 10-1 after three and a half innings of play. But, a rallying cry in the bottom of the fourth propelled ACCS to an eventual 15-13 win.
“I told the team after the game, my hat is off to you for never quitting,” ACCS head coach Richy Spears said. “They never laid down. I’m happy for the seniors, especially, and all of the kids.”
Riverfield took control of the game early, plating a run in the second and then adding eight in the top of the third. But a costly error in the fourth shifted the momentum to ACCS.
“Steven Porter came in and put down a bunt at the beginning of the inning and they had an error and we scored two runs,” Spears said. “Then we were able to score five more after that. That play really got us putting the ball in play.”
Riverfield rallied, though, in the top of the fifth, scoring three more runs, prompting ACCS to once again find a way to comeback.
The Rebels responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning, and at that time, Spears received a request from one of his seniors.
“Wade (Simpson) is something else,” said Spears of the senior requesting to pitch. “He said he wanted the ball so I said, ‘You want it? You got it.’”
Simpson did what he has done all year, shut down opposing batters, and ACCS was able to plate two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to seal the victory.
“That feeling when Wade has the ball on the mound makes everyone feel better,” Spears said. “The players have confidence in him and take on his mentality, that aggressive and tough as nails mentality.”
Simpson was also a force at the plate racking up five hits. Marshall Edmonds also had three hits for the Rebels.
With the win, ACCS finishes the season with a 6-9 record.
