Cathedral, Monterey meet expectations set before game

NATCHEZ — With district play waiting just around the corner for both Cathedral and Monterey, the two teams were looking to accomplish a few key things Monday night in a clash at Liberty Park.
For Cathedral, it was getting ace pitcher Quinton Logan deep into a game, and for Monterey, it was just facing a quality opponent.
Cathedral took home the win 10-0, but both teams got what they were looking for.
“This was exactly what we needed to see,” Monterey head coach Eric Richard said. “We needed to see that good pitching. That is why we play Cathedral. We don’t get any power points or anything for this, but it is good competition for us.”
On the other end, Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley got a six-inning shutout from Logan, who turned in his third consecutive quality performance.
“We are hoping he can continue to pitch like that for us into the stretch run of district coming up and into the playoffs,” Beesley said.
Logan allowed just two hits over the six innings, both singles by Jake Barlow, and struck out 13.
“I wanted to get Quinton’s pitch count up pretty high tonight,” Beesley said. “He ended up with 105, and we were trying to get him up around there. He hasn’t pitched into a game this year, so we wanted to go ahead and get his count up for a night and see how he reacted. He didn’t lose any velocity late into the game, so that was good to see.”
Another thing that was good to see for Beesley were the 10 runs Cathedral were able to plate. However, Beesley said he expected more from his team.
“I thought we left a lot of runs on base early in the game,” he said. “We couldn’t put a big inning together, we couldn’t get runners over on sacrifice bunts and we didn’t execute early.”
However, the Green Wave were able to string together a four-run sixth inning to seal the game.
Beesley also said opposing pitcher Ryne Richard was a big reason why the bats struggled a bit.
“Their pitcher did a good job tonight of keeping us off-balance by changing up his speeds,” Beesley said. “We’ve got to be more disciplined at the plate if we want to win big games in terms of executing small ball and playing for big innings.”
Cathedral jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after the first inning on an RBI groundout from Zach Flattmann.
The Green Wave went on to add three in the second on RBI doubles from Reed White and Jacob Jenkins, and an RBI single from Andrew Beesley.
It wasn’t until the fifth that Cathedral was able to scratch across some more runs with Flattmann recording another RBI groundout and Brock Farmer pounding an RBI double.
The Green Wave put the game away in the sixth with White scoring on a wild pitch, Gabe Smith scoring on an error, Jenkins scoring when Flattmann was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and a sacrifice fly from Pate Shirley.
With one more game before district, Beesley said he sees some bright spots, but there is still work to do.
“At times we can be good,” he said. “Early in the game tonight, I was disappointed in our effort, but we played a little better as the game went on. Hopefully, we come out in the right frame of mind when we face Bogue Chitto here.”
