NATCHEZ — The Harvest Club of Natchez will hit the greens this weekend to not only celebrate their 40th anniversary, but also to help charities and local youth.
The golf tournament will be at Duncan Park, with a shotgun start set for 9 a.m. Saturday.
“This tournament has a couple of different goals,” tournament director K.G. Watkins said. “One is to promote golf within the neighborhood and among the youth. Then, of course, we are trying to do charitable work like donating to the American Heart Fund or American Cancer Society, or even getting clubs for local kids in high school.”
Watkins said there will be a practice round Friday, with the tournament consisting of 36 holes match play style, with each competitor playing 18 holes Saturday and 18 Sunday.
“We should have right around 100 players,” Watkins said. “Most of our players come from out of town. I know we’ve got golfers from at least eight different states.”
In addition to the tournament, Watkins said there will be a learning opportunity Saturday.
“We are going to do a free golf clinic between 12 and 2 p.m.,” he said. “We are going to have the Alcorn State team come out and help, as well as some of the golfers in the tournament.”
While the tournament will have its primary objectives of assisting others, Watkins said it is also a time that brings together old friends.
“This is something that I look forward to every year,” he said. “It is a one time a year thing and is a lot of work, but I look forward to it. It is a great time to socialize with old friends.”
Watkins said that the city of Natchez also benefits from the tournament.
“The people coming in are bringing financial support for the city,” he said.
“Last year, we only had maybe five or six players from Natchez and the rest were from out of town. I know that has some economic impact.”
