FRANKLINTON, La. — Centreville Academy’s Casey Haygood had a night to remember Friday as his Tigers took both games on the road against Bowling Green 10-8 and 7-0.
In the first game, Haygood was instrumental, knocking in three runs on a double and also launching a home run.
But it was the second game that was the icing on the cake, with Haygood tossing a no-hitter in the team’s win.
“He had everything working,” said Centreville head coach Jason Horne of Haygood. “He was keeping hitters off balance and we played good defense behind him. He also had eight strikeouts. He was the story of the night.”
Centreville pounded out 15 hits in the first game of the doubleheader, including a seven run fifth inning, to grab their tenth win of the year.
In the night cap, the Tigers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the first inning, and cruised from their behind Haygood’s work on the mound to improve to 11-3.
“I am very proud,” Horne said. “The kids work really hard at practice. All of our coaches stay on them and work them. They listened and did what we asked.”
Trinity drops both in doubleheader
WOODVILLE — An already rough start to the Trinity Episcopal Day School Saints baseball season continued Friday on the road against WCCA, where Trinity dropped both games of a doubleheader.
Despite the losses, head coach Elliot Meng is confident his team is getting better, and showing improvement.
“We are improving and we know that,” he said. “We are getting better. We aren’t down because we are young, and we have time to grow. We just have to get rid of the little mistakes.”
WCCA took the first game 16-1 in four innings of play.
The Rams jumped out to an early lead, scoring four runs in the top half of the first inning. Trintiy would answer with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning, but the Saints were unable to scratch anything else across the rest of the way.
WCCA posted seven runs in the second inning and five in the fourth to seal the win.
Colton Nettles, who pitched all four innings for the Rams got the win, while Jakarius Caston, who also pitched four innings, received the loss.
Caston and teammate Demond Fleming each recorded a double in the game.
“The first pitcher we faced had a good curveball and we aren’t used to that,” Meng said. “We had trouble with the curve. It is hard trying to throw curveballs in the cage at practice and we just need to get onto the field and practice against live pitching.”
In the second game, Trinity scored a run in the top half of the first, but WCCA came roaring right back.
The Rams scored seven in the first, five in the second and two in the third to put the Saints away.
Trinity would tack on a run in the top of the fourth to make the final score 14-2.
Caston was on the mound again for Trinity, and Meng said he was impressed by the showing the eighth-grader put on.
“Our pitching was much improved,” Meng said. “Jakarius was a workhorse for us, throwing about 100 pitches. Pitching was our weakest pint and we looked so much better in these games.”
Kevontaye Caston was the only Saint to record an extra base hit in the game.
With the two losses, Trinity falls to 0-7 on the year. Their next contest will be Wednesday at home in a doubleheader against Acadiana Home School starting at 5 p.m.
Cathedral downed by Franklin County
MEADVILLE — Despite having chances late in the game to get back on track, the Cathedral Green Wave were defeated by Franklin County 6-4 on the road Friday.
Trailing 5-1 entering the top half of the fifth, Cathedral rallied and scored three runs to come within one. But from there, the Green Wave couldn’t capitalize.
“We had chances late in the game with runners on in the fifth and sixth, but couldn’t push any runs across the plate,” Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley said. “They just made some defensive plays against us.”
Jacob McDaniel picked up the win for Franklin County, while Pate Shirley took the loss.
The Green Wave got a double from Zach Flattman and multiple hits from Andrew Beesley and Brock Farmer.
“I just want to see us keep improving game by game,” Beesley said. “We didn’t play well Tuesday and tonight we had good and bad moments. Hopefully we can start stringing things together.”
Cathedral takes the field again today at 11 a.m. against Enterprise.
