Save the Hall Ball to help history

NATCHEZ — Natchez is a showcase of national historic landmarks and preserving those is neither easy nor inexpensive.
That is why chairperson Katie Wood Freiberger looks to raise funds for Stanton Hall and Longwood with Natchez’s first Save the Hall Ball.
The ball, which will take place from 9:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday at Stanton Hall and the Carriage House, will raise funds for the two iconic treasures while providing fine food, drinks and music for its guests, Freiberger said.
“The event is for everyone,” she said.
Freiberger has already seen support from friends near and far. She was given $20,000 to kick off her fundraiser for Stanton Hall and Longwood.
Ginny Brewer of Atlanta, who serves as Freiberger’s honorary co-chairperson, donated $10,000 to the fundraiser while Dr. James T. Coy III and Ruthie Coy, who own the Bontura home on Broadway Street, donated $10,000.
“There has been tremendous support and it just shows me what affection Natchez people have for theses two properties,” Freiberger said.
Freiberger said both of the homes need significant maintenance.
Longwood is currently in need of roof repairs and restoration of its kitchen. Stanton Hall is looking to analyze structural issues that are impacting its dentils, which are closely spaced, rectangular blocks that form along the roofline of a building, Freiberger said.
“The house is a historic landmark,” Freiberger said. “So we are closely governed as to what we can do to repair it.”
Freiberger said the ultimate goal of the fundraiser is to demonstrate to other institutions that wish to give is that the City of Natchez has great local support.
This fundraiser is counting on the City of Natchez to show its support, Freiberger said.
The fundraiser will feature “Anita,” a dance band from Atlanta, an open bar and a cocktail buffet and breakfast by Carriage House Chef Bingo Starr.
A silent auction will also take place during the fundraiser.
“It’s going to be fun,” Freiberger said. “We have people from as far as Maine who bought tickets to come to this event.”
Because the fundraiser is taking place during Spring Pilgrimage, Freiberger said the exciting part about the weekend is that both the Pilgrimage Garden Club court and the Natchez Garden Club court will be in the Tableaux, which she is hoping to promote as well.
“Those who attend the Tableaux can attend the ball afterward,” Freiberger said. “That’s kind of how the traditional pilgrimage balls have been.”
Men who attend the ball are asked to wear a tuxedo with a black tie while women can wear formal attire.
Tickets are $100 per person and can be purchased by visiting natchezpilgrimage.com or by calling 601-446-6631 or 1-800-647-6742.
