Youth baseball camp coming to Natchez

NATCHEZ — Last baseball season, Chip Sturdivant saw a need in the community.
Now, his plan is being put into action.
“Last year was the first year I was a member on the Natchez Dixie Youth board of directors and I got to watch a lot of baseball games,” Sturdivant said. “I just noticed that there was a need for fundamentals to be taught to the kids playing in the league. So I came up with the idea of having a camp.”
Sturdivant said he ran the idea past the president of the league and got the green light. Then, he approached Wyatt Craig, the owner of Sports Center, and received more good news.
“Wyatt thought it was a great idea too, and he said Sports Center would sponsor the camp and provide lunch for the kids.”
After getting the ball rolling, Sturdivant began tackling his next step, instructors, and he turned to Natchez native — Nook Logan.
The camp, which is being called Sports Center Baseball Clinic, will cover the fundamentals of the game — fielding, running the bases and batting.
But what Sturdivant is hoping happens, is everyone is able to enjoy themselves.
“I just am hoping to see smiles on kids faces and enthusiasm from them,” he said. “Hopefully they pick something up that day, too. And it is not every day that you get a chance to be on the same field with a former Major League player like Nook Logan and some other guys that were really great baseball players in Natchez.”
The clinic is set for Saturday, March 21 from 9 a.m. until noon, and is open for ages 6-12.
Clinic events will be taking place at Carroll-Jones Field at Duncan Park in Natchez.
Anyone interested is asked to sign up at Sports Center, or can sign up the day of the clinic at the field.
The clinic is free of charge.
