Accused shooter in Lorman slaying remains in jail, bond set

LORMAN — The man accused of killing Natchez native Travis Woods is still being held in the Claiborne County Defensive Center.
Claiborne County Sheriff Marvin Lucas said Kennen McCallister, 21, was given a $500,000 bond following his arraignment last Friday on two counts of aggravated assault and one count murder.
McCallister, of Natchez, was charged in the fatal shooting of Natchez native and former Jackson State University football player Woods.
McCallister was working as a security guard at the time he allegedly shot Woods. Law enforcement officials said in reports McCallister was trying to break up a fight outside Patton’s Store in Lorman at approximately 2 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, when he allegedly fired the shots at Woods, Freddie Nash and Jadarrius Jackson.
Woods was fatally wounded. Nash and Jackson have since been released from the hospital.
Lucas said McCallister’s case will be presented to a grand jury in April.
Woods, 23, was a 2009 graduate of Natchez High School and went on to play for JSU. He was a starting defensive back for the JSU team in 2013.
McCallister is likewise a graduate of NHS, and played on the team with Woods in 2008.
Woods was honored with a candle light vigil last Friday at the Natchez High School football field at which his jersey was retired.
