sicily island — The Sicily Island Tigers are no strangers to putting up big numbers on the scoreboard, but they took things to a new level in their win Tuesday night.
The Tigers were hosting senior night and they sent their veteran players off with a bang, crushing Kilbourne High School, 125-46.
“We’ve had a couple of games this year where we had 101 and 106, but that is the most,” Sicily Island head coach Curtis Shavers said.
Senior Larry Plummer led the way for Sicily Island, dropping 57 points in his final home game.
Plummer said he know going into the game that he was going to have a big night.
“I knew when my coach told me, ‘It is senior night, you have to put up points,’ that I was going to have a big game,” Plummer said.
Plummer’s 57 is the most one player has scored under Shavers, who has been coaching at Sicily Island for 28 years.
“Larry is a complete guard,” Shavers said. “He is a point guard that can drive, penetrate, pass and score. He’s a very good outside shooter from any area on the court.”
Plummer said the night was his best basketball memory to date.
“It makes me feel good,” he said. “It was a great feeling.”
It is also a night that will stay with Shavers for quite some time.
“A former guy that was an All-State player for me, Karlos Gary has been helping with the team and I told Larry, ‘You might be getting close to Karlos’ record tonight,’” Shavers said.
Alongside Plummer, Henry Higgs helped propel the Tigers from beyond the arc early in the game, to build a big lead.
While the scoreboard may appear lopsided, Shavers said he wasn’t running up the score.
“Our seniors played most of the game, with it being senior night,” he said. “We have three seniors, two who start and our other senior is a rold player who hadn’t seen much action. They all played the whole first quarter and then our other two starters rotated in. We kept rotating through the second and third quarters. In the fourth quarter, the starting lineup went back in and then we started subbing again with about 3-and-a-half minutes left to play. We were just still able to score.”
Although it was the last time Plummer will suit up for a home game at Sicily Island, he is hoping to continue playing.
“I want to go to college and play,” he said. “I’m thinking LSU or Louisiana Tech.”
