NATCHEZ — Two Natchez men were arrested early Sunday morning after trespassing at an apartment complex they were banned from and one shooting at an off-duty officer who was not injured.
Ronnie L. Thompson, 24, 583 Lower Woodville Road, was arrested and charged with trespassing and aggravated assault on a police officer.
Natchez Police officer Nikita Stone was off-duty Saturday when he was doing security work at Susie B West Apartments when he encountered Thompson and Tyrell Green, who were banned from the apartment complex, NPD Lieutenant Craig Godbold said.
At approximately 6 p.m., Stone advised Thompson and Green to leave the premises but they would not comply, Godbold said.
Stone then told Thompson and Green they were under arrest for trespassing, which led Thompson to pull out a small, semi-automatic handgun from his waistband.
Godbold said Stone was able to take down Thompson and attempt to gain control of the weapon, but Green interfered and the two suspects escaped into the wooded area near the apartments.
Stone pursued Thompson and Green on foot, but Thompson fired shots at Stone, Godbold said.
Although Stone was not injured, members of the NPD surrounded the apartment complex and called K-9 units to track Thompson and Green through the woods.
After witnesses on scene identified Thompson and Green, the search was terminated.
At approximately 3 a.m. Sunday, Godbold said officers surrounded Thompson’s home.
“When the police surrounded the house, (Thompson) came out and surrendered,” Godbold said.
Green was also at the house and both suspects were taken into custody.
Thompson and Green were both charged with trespassing, while Thompson was also charged with aggravated assault.
Both men remained at the Natchez Jail with a bond of $726 each for trespassing.
No bond has been set for Thompson’s aggravated assault charge.
