NATCHEZ — The libraries of the Miss-Lou are kicking the weekend off with cultural and scientific activities.
Expect sunny skies with a few clouds all weekend with temperatures reaching the mid 90s all weekend.
Library Movie Night
Natchez residents can go to the Judge George W. Armstrong library for a showing the Oscar award winning film “Philomena” from 5 to 6:30 p.m tonight.
Circulation manager Marianne Raley said the plot involves a British journalist trying to reunite a mother and her lost son after decades of separation.
“It’s heartwarming, it’s funny, it shows you a part of life that we really don’t know much about,” Raley said. “Young girls in the 50s were much different than young girls today.”
Raley said “Philomena” will kick off the library’s more adult oriented events after the summer reading program.
The film is based on the book “The Lost Child of Philomena Lee” by Martin Sixsmith.
“I’ve seen it twice, and I’m excited to see it again,” Raley said. “It’s very well done.”
This event is free and open to the public. Popcorn and soda will be provided by the library.
Bone Lady of Louisiana
Louisiana’s top forensic anthropologist, Mary Manhien, will be sharing her experience of examining criminal cold cases 6 p.m. today at the Vidalia Conference and Convention Center.
Manhien will talk about cases she’s solved in Louisiana, the methods she used and her role in the justice system.
“I plan on being there, and a lot of my employees will be there,” Concordia Parish Sheriff Kenneth Hedrick said. “And I hope the public comes out as well.”
Hedrick said he is excited to learn more about the forensics field, and the sheriff thinks the information will be interesting to the residents of the parish.
“It’s something that doesn’t come around here,” Hedrick said. “And it’s something that’s good to know.”
The event is free and open to the public.
Friday night football
Football season kicks off in the Miss-Lou Friday.
Natchez High School will take on Wilkinson County High School at 7 p.m.
