Oil company asked to leave parish after road damage

NATCHEZ — The Concordia Police Jury voted Monday to give an oil company until November to abandon its pipeline near Monterey.
Police Jury President Melvin Ferrington said he has been in legal discussion with Plains All American Oil Company over who has the responsibility of damages to Kemp Landing Road, and who should pay for any repairs.
Ferrington claims the Houston oil company’s vehicles exceeds the load limit of the road causing damage, but Plains is not willing to pay for repairs.
All oil companies in Concordia Parish agree to a safety deposit for damages to roads the company uses, Ferrington said.
Plains has a $25,000 bond on the road, but the company’s insurance agents decide how much the company will pay.
“The parish does not have the money to get in there and repair that road without the $25,000 road bond,” Ferrington said.
This is the first time the police jury has dealt with an oil company damaging a road and not paying for it.
“This is the first time going through it, so need to set the precedent,” Juror Jerry Beatty said.
The jury also voted for a code variance to temporarily allow Plains vehicles to move equipment out of the area.
