NATCHEZ — Atmos Energy officials responded to Country Squire Road late Tuesday to reports of a gas leak and found a break in a natural gas line that was damaged during installation of fiber by contracted construction crews.

Andrew Calvit, operations supervisor for Atoms Energy Corporation in Natchez, said the line was quickly repaired at approximately 11 p.m. and that no houses had to be evacuated.

“We were keeping a constant check to see if there was any migration of gas, but there was none of that so we didn’t have to do any evacuations or anything like that,” Calvit said. “Anytime we start seeing that, we call for the sheriff’s office, police department, emergency management and evacuate the entire area, but that was not the case this time.”

Calvit said Atmos officials determined a company contracted by Cable ONE to install fiber throughout the area that had been boring in the neighborhood likely got into the natural gas line and caused the temporary leak.

“This was an isolated event, and we’re glad the residents called in the leak so we could come investigate,” Calvit said. “We didn’t lose a single customer the whole time and no one had to be evacuated, so that’s the good part of this whole deal.”
