NATCHEZ — The Mississippi Women’s Golf Association State Amateur tournament will be a family affair as two sisters face each other in the finals of the championship flight today.
Kathleen and Mary Langdon Gallagher will tee off at 9:30 a.m. at Beau Pre County Club as they both fight for their second state title,
Kathleen, 17, is the defending champion from the 2013 tournament, while Mary Langdon won in 2010.
Both Gallaghers had to play some tough and familiar competition to get to the finals.
Kathleen said she went against a close friend in Conner Beth Ball in Wednesday’s semifinals, and Mary Langdon had the daunting task of going head to head with her mother and 11-time tournament winner Cissye Gallagher.
“This was my third time to play (my mother) and I knew if I got up on her, I would have to stay up on her,” Mary Langdon said. “If knew if I let up a little bit and she beat me one hole, everything would’ve changed. But it was so much fun and I enjoyed playing with her.”
Kathleen finds herself back in the finals of the championship flight where she left off last year, but she said today would be totally different from her last go around.
“I feel like I’m more calm about it, because I actually understand what I’m getting into compared to last year,” Kathleen said.
When it comes to playing her sister, Mary Langdon said the key would be separating a fun day on the course with her sister, from making sure she stays focused on each hole.
“We were laughing about it earlier,” Mary Langdon said. “I have never played her in a match play before. Match play is different because it’s just you against her and you have to play the course well. But either way, we’ve both worked hard and it’ll be a lot of fun.”
