NATCHEZ — A variety of indoor and outdoor events are scheduled for this weekend in the Miss-Lou, offering residents a chance to hear the songs of Broadway or learn to develop a residential landscape.

Sunny skies are forecast throughout the weekend with temperatures reaching the high 80s Saturday.

Horticulture tips

LSU AgCenter specialist Dan Gill will present “Horticulture Tips: Beautifying Your Yard” at 6 p.m. today at the Concordia Parish Library in Vidalia.

Gill is a spokesperson for the LSU AgCenter’s “Get It Growing” project, and will offer basic tips to residents on developing a design for a home landscape, and how tot choose the right plants that do well in the area.

The Vidalia Library is located on Texas Street in Vidalia.

Civil War program

The Natchez National Historical Park will present “Grinding, Relentless War: The Overland Campaign of 1864” at 7 p.m. today at the Historic Natchez Foundation.

The program is a part of the park service’s continuing commemoration of the sesquicentennial of the Civil War. The event is free and open to the public.

A panel composed of nationally recognized historians will discuss the series of battles and impact the campaign had on the North and South.

Friday forum

This week’s topic is a legislative update and all local state legislators, including Rep. Sam Mims, Sen. Kelvin Butler, Sen. Melanie Sojourner, Rep. Robert Johnson, Rep. Angela Cockerham and Rep. Chuck Middleton, have been invited to attend.

The weekly forum begins at 8 a.m. at Natchez Coffee Company.

Festival of music

A Tosca-filled weekend with events hosted by the Natchez Festival of Music kicks off Friday and will be packed with intrigue, divas, Greece and passion.

At 7 p.m. Friday at Waverly Plantation, Maryann Kyle will perform “The World of Maria Callas,” which is a tribute to the internationally acclaimed soprano, Maria Callas.

Cash bar refreshments will be available one hour before the performance.

Regular admission tickets are $35, with $10 tickets for students or active military personnel.

Waverly Plantation is located at 790 U.S. 61 South.

At 3 p.m. Saturday in the Natchez Eola Hotel lobby, hear Stanley Hauer present “The Truth About Tosca,” during a free community event with a cash bar.

At 7 p.m. Saturday, Tosca will be performed at the Margaret Martin Performing Arts Center.

Tosca is a passionate story set to the music of Puccini and tells the tale of a woman caught between her fugitive lover and the malicious police chief who is chasing him.

Cash bar refreshments will be available in The Grape Escape Club Room an hour before the performance.

Regular admission tickets are $35, with $10 tickets for students or active military personnel.

Dreamgirls

The Natchez High School Choral Department will present “Dreamgirls” with three performances throughout the weekend.

NHS students will perform the play, which is a Broadway musical that was adapted into a hit film in 2006.

The performance will be at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 3 p.m. Sunday all at the NHS auditorium.

Tickets are $5 in advance and $7 at the door.

Kitten adoption day

The Natchez-Adams County Humane Society will host a kitten and cat adoption day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Natchez Mall near the theater entrance, Stine Lumber on U.S. 61 South and Tractor Supply Co. on U.S. 61 North.

The price to adopt one or two kittens is $35, which includes spaying or neutering.

K. Michelle concert

R&B recording artist K. Michelle will perform at the Natchez Convention Center at 8 p.m. Saturday.
