FERRIDAY — Ferriday High School valedictorian Cailyn Glenn doesn’t think grades equal life experience, so instead of telling his fellow graduates what to do with their lives, he offered them practical advice at their graduation Thursday night.

“No. 1, procrastination is not your friend,” he said. “No. 2, you are a work in progress. No one gets it completely right the first time. No. 3, no one is holding you back. You are the only one who can limit yourself, and No. 4, when you change, change for the better and not for others.”

Glenn noted that many of his classmates had plans to attend college, join the military or join the workforce.

“Whatever the plan is, take it seriously because it can impact the rest of your lives,” he said. “And while you’re at it, try to find something you like.”

Glenn reminded his classmates they had many people to thank for their accomplishments. Glenn thanked parents, teachers, coaching staff, class advisers, administrative and office staff.

“As you can see, we did not get here on our own,” he said.

Salutatorian La’Tondria Jefferson said the class of 2014 graduates have been blessed with teachers who have believed in them, parents who pushed them and friends who stood beside them.

“As we leave Ferriday High School, I say to my fellow graduates, don’t just follow your dreams — chase them,” Jefferson said. “And do your best to make things happen. Remember that anything is possible, if you set your mind to it. Stay focused and enjoy life. Have fun along the way, but always be able to separate the fun times from the serious times. Soon, we will all be together again with great stories to share.”
