NATCHEZ — A discount department store that could create 40 jobs is opening in Natchez.

Mayor Butch Brown said Thursday Roses Discount Store is opening a location in Morgantown Plaza, the shopping center that houses Natchez Market No. 2 and Goodwill.

Roses is owned by Variety Wholesalers, based in North Carolina. The company operates 419 stores in three separate divisions, according to the company’s website.

The Roses division consists of 112 stores ranging in size from 30,000 square feet to 70,000 square feet and are chiefly competitive with discount stores such as K-Mart and Walmart. The stores offer an assortment of retail merchandise, including toys, health and beauty aids, housewares, furniture, sporting goods, snacks, clothing, accessories, jewelry and other items.

Brown said he is happy Roses will be joining the city’s business community and creating jobs.

“We think this is a good market for their product, and we’re looking forward to them being a part of our community,” he said.

Attempts to reach a Roses representative were unsuccessful Thursday.

Brown said Roses will host a grand opening ceremony on May 29.
