Hannon Spotswood Hairston

DAPHNE, Ala. — Services for Hannon Spotswood Hairston, 79, of Daphne, Ala., formerly of Mobile, Ala., who died Saturday, April 26, 2014, will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Christ the King Catholic Church.

Burial will follow in Belforest Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home.Hannon Hairston obit 04:29

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday with The Rosary prayed at 10 a.m. Thursday both at the funeral home.

Mr. Hairston was the son of Legare Hairston and Miriam Spotswood Hairston.

He graduated from McGill Institute and then attended Auburn University, where he graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering. After graduation, he worked a short time with the U.S. Army Corp. of Engineers.

He later went to work for Mobile Pulley and Machine Works as a design engineer. His career there lasted 38 years, and he climbed the ranks of the company serving as president for 10 years and as co-owner in his last five years retiring in 1998.

In 1991, he began serving on the board of directors of Mercy Medical later being named chairman of the local board.

He served his church family during his life through many different ministries including the Christ the King school board, the church finance committee, building committee, Stephen’s Ministry, Vocations Ministry, Catholic Charities and Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration.

He served the Mobile Archdiocese as the Archdiocesan Chairman for the 2004 Catholic Charities Appea. He was also a long-time member of the McGill-Toolen Development Committee.

Mr. Hairston was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Herold Hairston; parents; infant daughter, Patricia Ann Hairston; infant granddaughter, Shannon Lee Carter; two brothers, Frederick S. Hairston and Legare Hairston; one sister, Mary Frances H. Eberlein.

Survivors include three daughters, Miriam Bailey and husband, Doug, Elizabeth Hall, Susan Carter and husband, Scott, all of Daphne; five grandchildren, Mary Catherine, William Bailey, Taylor Hall, Nicole Carter and Courtney Carter; and a number of other relatives and friends.
