NATCHEZ — Ernest Lee Johnson knew exactly what happened when he heard a loud crashing noise and then a thump on his roof when he was lying in bed Friday night.

“I knew it was tree; it fell right over the bed,” Johnson said.

Luckily for Johnson, his girlfriend, Mary Elizabeth Taylor, and their dog, Carlos, a large limb kept the tree from falling completely through their Martin Luther King Jr. Road house.

But the tree did break rafters in the house, which damaged the ceiling and caused water to come in the house.

Lindsey Shelton / The Natchez Democrat — A tree fell Friday night on a Martin Luther King Jr. Road house and nearly injured Ernest Lee Johnson and his girlfriend Mary Elizabeth Taylor.

The couple had to move their bed to the living room and placed a pot in the bedroom to catch leaking water.

Taylor said she is thankful the damage was not worse and no one was hurt.

“I almost had a heart attack when it happened, but thank the Lord we didn’t get hurt,” she said.

The damage at Johnson and Taylor’s house is one of several after a line of thunderstorms moved through the area Friday night at approximately 10:30 p.m.

National Weather Service meteorologist Brad Bryant said judging by damage reports, wind gusts got up to approximately 50-60 mph and possibly 70 mph.

Bryant said the NWS received reports of damage in Adams County, including trees down and lawn furniture blown through a window of a Morgantown Road house.

Emergency Management Director Stan Owens said he received reports of trees and power lines down scattered throughout the county. Owens said he did not receive any reports of injuries.

Trees and power lines were reported down in Vidalia, Bryant said, as well as structural damage to one house and a porch blown off a mobile home.

Concordia Parish Police Jury President Melvin Ferrington said he and Homeland Security Charles “Junior” Tarver rode around the parish Saturday morning assessing storm damage.

Ferrington said he did not receive any reports of injuries.

Most of the damage to houses, flooding and trees down were in the Airport Road vicinity, Ferrington said.

The Vidalia Recreation Complex also suffered damage, Ferrington said, with fences and other structures blown over.

“Right now, we’re just assessing the damage, I’m just thankful no one was hurt during all this,” he said.

Wilkinson County Emergency Management Agency Director Thomas C. Tolliver Jr. said Wilkinson County was working with Mississippi Emergency Management Agency and other state officials Saturday to assess flooding damage following heavy rains Thursday. Tolliver said he had not received any reports of damage following Friday night’s storms.
