NATCHEZ — A Natchez man is behind bars after a police officer reportedly caught him burglarizing a Dumas Drive house Monday night.
Natchez Police Detective Jerry Ford said an officer responded to a burglary call at a house in the 200 block of Dumas Drive shortly after 9 p.m. and found Tyrone L. McGriff, 23, 208 Dumas Drive, attempting to leave the house through the backdoor.
The officer ordered McGriff to stop, but McGriff fled into a wooded area near the 400 block of Watts Avenue. A K-9 officer and dog tracked McGriff through the woods. The dog led police back to the 400 block of Watts to a laptop, plastic bags containing cigars and cigarettes, $26 cash, a gold chain and a cell phone charger.
The dog then reportedly tracked McGriff to his residence, where he was arrested.
McGriff was being held without bond in the Natchez City Jail Tuesday.
Police are also investigating two other Monday burglaries, one on George F. West Boulevard and another on Watts Avenue.
Ford said police have not determined if the burglaries are related.
Anyone with any information about the burglaries should call Crime Stoppers at 601-442-5000.
