Weekend Ticket: Nutcracker ballet, indoor events headline weekend

NATCHEZ — Learn how to describe the basic underlying flavors of wine or see a classic Christmas ballet this weekend in the Miss-Lou.

Showers and thunderstorms are forecast for a majority of the weekend, with temperatures getting into the low 50s Friday and Saturday.

The Natchez Ballet Academy will host its annual performance of “The Nutcracker” at 7 p.m. today through Saturday, as well as a 1 p.m. performance Saturday at the Natchez City Auditorium.

The mainly all-local cast of student dancers will take to the stage to perform the Christmas ballet.

Tickets are $15 for ages 3 and up and will be available for purchase at the city auditorium on performance days.

Friday forum

This week’s topic includes representatives from Natchez Community Alliance providing updates on recent events within the organization.

The weekly forum begins at 8 a.m. at Natchez Coffee Company.

Trinity Bake Sale

The Episcopal Church Women of Trinity Episcopal Church will host a bake sale from 9 a.m. to noon Friday in Kuehnle Hall at 305 S. Commerce St.

Casseroles, baked goods, soups and desserts will be available for purchase.

Handmade needle work items and raffle tickets for a, “Harvest Basket of Goodies” will also be available.

The event is free and open to the public.

Humane society events

The Natchez-Adams County Humane Society will host pet photos with Santa and a kitten adoption day Saturday.

The photos with Santa will take place at the center court of the Natchez Mall, with cat photos from 10 to 11 a.m. and dog photos from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Owners are asked to have all pets in a crate or on a leash while inside the mall.

Photos will cost $10, with all proceeds benefiting the humane society.

The kitten adoption day will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Stine on U.S. 61 South.

The price of adopting an animal — $35 for two kittens and $25 for one kitten — includes spaying and neutering costs.

Wine 101

ArtsNatchez is hosting an adult wine education class titled “Wine 101” at 7 p.m. Saturday at the gallery on 425 Main St.

Participants will learn about the characteristics of six different varietals of wine, including a Riesling, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet.

Participants will also discover how to use their nose and palates to determine and describe the basic underlying flavors of wine.

Josh Boteler, a field sales representative from the E. & J. Gallo Winery, the world’s largest family-owned winery, will lead the class.

Tickets are $50 per person or $90 per couple and must be purchased in advance.

Fashion show

Adams County CASA will host the “Divine Nine Greek Fashion Show” at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Natchez Convention Center.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at Adams County Youth Court.

All proceeds from the fashion show will benefit abused and neglected children of Adams County.

Dance workshop

Students from Ferriday and Vidalia studying Spanish and raising money for a language-learning trip to Costa Rica will host a hip hop dance workshop from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Concordia Parish Academy on Robert Webber Drive.

The workshop will feature guest teachers Brianne Connelly and Emmanuel Evans, and professional dancers who have trained at the hip hop conservatory in New York City.

All dancers ages 7 to 18 are encouraged to enroll for $20.

Those interested can enroll at the Concordia Parish Academy with Jennifer Jeffers or at Vidalia High School with Sydney Spain.
